Understanding PMDD through lived experience and clinical insight - for individuals and the clinicians supporting them.
A workshop for people living with PMDD and the clinicians supporting them
I keep getting asked to run a workshop on PMDD, so… here it is.
Over the past few years I’ve had two groups of people asking the same thing from completely different angles:
• People wondering “Do I have this? Is this what’s happening to me every month?”
• Clinicians saying “I realise I didn’t learn much about PMDD and I want to understand it properly.”
So I decided to create a workshop that speaks to both. Because here’s the thing: I sit on both sides of this conversation. I’m a clinician who supports people navigating complex emotional experiences… and I’m also someone who knows what it’s like to become a raging, angsty, deeply depressed human during the luteal phase. I see both sides because I live it.
This workshop blends lived experience with clinical understanding of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) - something that is often misunderstood, minimised, or completely missed in mental health conversations.
In this workshop we’ll cover:
• What PMDD actually is
• What it feels like from a lived experience perspective
• Why it happens - the brain and hormonal sensitivity side of things
• Why PMDD gets missed (spoiler: medical misogyny)
• Who can help/helpful referrals (spoiler: it’s not your partner breathing in your vicinity that’s for sure)
• What clinicians should know but often aren’t taught
• Practical ways to support yourself or clients through the luteal phase
• Cycle awareness and working with your brain instead of against it
